Business Leaders Teach the Next Generation

The Glenelg and Southern Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network’s Future Leaders of Industry have received some advice from some of Alcoa’s leaders in a valuable workshop last Tuesday. This year the leaders have heard from a number of people in business but on Tuesday they had a global lesson from Alcoa vice-president of smelting in Europe and Australia Kai-Rune Heggland.Mr Heggland was joined by Portland Aluminium plant manager Peter Chellis as the two gave the leaders some insight into what it took to climb through the smelting industry as well as a rundown of the smelter itself.

Mr Chellis said it was a great opportunity for the leaders to learn and ask any questions that they may have had."I am passionate about education and providing opportunities where we can," he said."Today was simply about sharing information and knowledge about the business and giving some insight into the careers on offer here at PA."As well as just being there to answer any questions that the students have - nothing was off limits, it was great to be able to have the one on one time set aside," said Mr Chellis. After meeting with the two Alcoa heads the leaders got a fist hand look at how one of Portland’s biggest industries runs with and extensive tour of the smelter. The afternoon was finished with further personal development for the leaders as they worked on their public speaking skills, a skill that can be vital when they enter the working world.
