Re-engagement Program Reignites a Love of Learning

Seven years after its launch one of Portland’s great success stories, the Portland Secondary College Re-Engagement Centre, has pledged its commitment to the future. The innovative educational facility marked its milestone with a student-run morning tea, with many organisations and businesses using the opportunity to pledge their continued support. The 36 students, as well as teaching staff, hosted 12 businesses, organisations and community groups at the Victoria Parade campus on Wednesday morning, with much of the food made by the appreciative students.Student Taylor Hill, 17, moved the audience when she spoke passionately about how the program helped her reignite her spark for learning after missing almost two years of school."Like you, I’m a big fan of this place," Taylor said."In year 7 I was going into hospital quite a bit, so I missed a lot of school."In year 8 … I went to less than five days; I stayed at home a lot and did nothing."In year 9 I joined the first girls group at the Re-Engagement Centre with seven other girls; it was the first time I’d had success since leaving primary school."That year, Taylor attended more than 80% of her classes."The big difference for me was having less people, nicer teachers and more support to get my work done."Last year I achieved my Foundation VCAL Certificate … this is more than I thought I would ever achieve."I was overwhelmed with pride to achieve so much in one year."This year I am doing my Intermediate VCAL certificate, and when – not if – I achieve this, I will be looking for full time work."I am not going back to sitting on the couch."As one of the 12 organisations firmly supporting the re-engagement program, Portland Aluminium community relations advisor Anna Impey said it is important to give all young people the best chance in achieving their potential."For the past three years, Portland Aluminium has streamlined our partnerships and about 90% of that is aimed at education, opportunity and leadership," Ms Impey said."Our philosophy, especially (Portland Aluminium plant manager) Peter Chellis’, is to grow your leaders from within."By supporting the Re-Engagement Centre, we hope to give the younger generation the best opportunity they can have."Long-time re-engagement program teacher Chris Thomas said it was heartening to see so many supporters use Wednesday’s gathering as an opportunity to sign the program’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).  Download the complete article, on the link below the photo.
