Year 10 Work Experience

A number of Portland Secondary College Year 10 students are getting to see what it’s like to spend time in a workplace of their choice. The students were this week given the opportunity to spend time in a workplace; some were inspired by their interests and some were influenced by past experiences. Chad Cleary, 16, spent the week at BJM Panels, a local panel beating business owned by Brent Murray. Chad decided to work there because of his passion for cars and interest in that particular workplace."I have felt very welcome," Chad said."I’ve been helping restore old cars, repainting cars and sanding down panels." While he enjoyed his work, he said he has faced some challenges such as being around potentially dangerous equipment and trying not to scratch anything they had repainted.BJM Panels is the first place that Chad has worked at and said it was a good environment and he would definitely consider this workplace and others like it as a future job. Classmate Alysha Meade, 16, chose to do her work experience at Portland South Primary School after attending the school in her younger years. Alysha said in the first two days of working there she had already been in all the classes. Further inspiration to spend time at Portland South was that she enjoyed babysitting family friends’ children, which gave her some knowledge to take to her work experience week. "One of my favourite experiences in the week was getting to work with the children in the art classrooms, helping to make things," she said. - Portland Secondary College students CAILIN PEARCE and photographer MICHAEL PETERS are on work experience at the Portland Observer.
