Eligible children and young persons have the right to be admitted to their designated neighbourhood government school, regardless of capacity.
A student’s designated neighbourhood school is generally the school that is nearest the student’s permanent address as determined by the school zone. The Find My School website provides guidance on which school zone a student’s permanent residence is located within.
Students are also able to apply for a place at a school that is not their designated neighbourhood school if there is sufficient accommodation.
Information regarding Parent Payments is located under the Policies tab in the Parent Payments Policy.
Enrolment at Portland Secondary College’s Re-Engagement Campus is governed by the same guidelines as enrolment at the main campus.
The Portland Re-Engagement Program is a satellite campus of Portland Secondary College and caters specifically for students who have disengaged or are at risk of doing so from mainstream education. Students at risk of disengagement would attend the Re-Engagement Program only in instances where their needs are not able to be met in mainstream school.
Students may be considered at risk of disengaging based on the following indicators:
- low or non-attendance
- literacy and / or numeracy outcomes
- behaviours of concern
- a history of school exclusion.
The student should present, at a minimum, multiple indicators that they are at high risk of disengaging from education, or are already disengaged from education.
FLOs should be considered a short term intervention and the focus should be on supporting the student to return to their host school, or into further training or employment.
The referral of a student to the Portland Re-Engagement Program will be agreed upon between the referring school, the student, their family or carer and the Re-Engagement Centre (and if required, approval by the region).
Specific additional approval is required by the regional director for referrals of students who:
- are under 15 years of age
- are being referred following an expulsion
- are in out-of-home care
- have been involved in the youth justice system
- identify as Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander, or are eligible for funding under the Program for Students with Disabilities.
Only after this Flexible Learning Option referral has been granted will a student be able to begin at the Re-Engagement Campus.
